Operation Black Box: Finding the Unseen Beneath the Surface

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY


On 8 May 2026, Banergy conducted Operation Black Box alongside the 2nd Battalion NDRF during a night-time underwater operation. With strong currents and near-zero visibility, the BROVX remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) was deployed to search beneath the surface using its onboard systems and sonar technology. During the operation, the team detected a submerged wreck and later identified another distinct sonar target at approximately 6–7 metres depth. Working alongside the NDRF team, within approximately 30 minutes, the team detected a submerged wreck and subsequently identified and recovered a black box, demonstrating the role of underwater robotics and sonar in challenging search and recovery operations.

Into the Darkness


Once BROVX was deployed, the operation entered its most demanding phase.

The vehicle descended into an environment where the operators could no longer rely on what they could see. The water was heavily turbid, visibility was effectively zero, and strong currents made maintaining control and position an added challenge.


Above the surface, the teams remained positioned together on the IRBs, coordinating the operation while the lights from the nearby bridge cut through the darkness. Below, the BROVX operators worked almost entirely through the information being returned to them by the vehicle. The search progressed methodically.


With every movement of the ROV, the operators were building a picture of an environment that could not be seen with the naked eye. Sonar became more than just another sensor, it became the primary means of understanding what was beneath the surface.

Then, something appeared on the sonar.



The Wreck


The first major discovery of the operation was a large submerged wreck.

A sizeable boat lay beneath the surface, concealed by the darkness and turbid water. Its presence became apparent through the sonar imagery, revealing a structure that would have been almost impossible to identify through conventional visual observation alone.

For the team, it was an unexpected discovery during the ongoing search, one that demonstrated just how much could remain hidden beneath the surface.

But the operation was far from over. The search continued. And before long, another target appeared.



The Black Box


The second target was different.

On the sonar display, the operators could make out a distinct object suspended beneath the surface, seemingly attached to a line or string. Its shape and acoustic signature made it worth investigating. The team moved towards it.


Working alongside the 2nd Battalion NDRF, the teams located the object and coordinated its recovery. The object was brought up from approximately 6–7 metres underwater.

It was a black box. What made the discovery particularly striking was the way it had appeared on the sonar. Against the surrounding water, the object produced a clear, almost geometric return, accompanied by a distinct acoustic shadow.


For the operators watching the sonar screen, the sequence was remarkable.

In complete darkness, several metres below the surface, the black box first existed only as an acoustic return. It was detected, interpreted, located, and finally recovered.

What could not be seen from above had been found beneath the surface. From deployment to the completion of the search, the entire operation was completed in approximately 30 minutes.




When Visibility Ends


Operation Black Box demonstrated the role of underwater robotics, ROVs, and sonar technology in environments where conventional visual search reaches its limits.

The operation took place at night, in strong currents and near-zero-visibility water. In such conditions, the ability of BROVX to provide operators with another way of understanding the underwater environment became critical to the search. But technology alone was only one part of the operation.


The mission required trained operators to interpret sonar information, manoeuvre the ROV, identify potential targets, and work alongside the NDRF team to coordinate their recovery.

From the IRBs above to the sonar screen below, every element of the operation worked together. And perhaps that is what made the discovery so striking.

The surface was dark. The water below was darker still.


Yet somewhere beneath it, a signal appeared on a screen and that signal led the team to something they could not see with their own eyes.

In the darkness, the water gave the team almost nothing to see. BROVX gave them something to find.



Beyond the Search


Operation Black Box, conducted on 8 May 2026, stands as an example of how remotely operated underwater vehicles, sonar systems, and trained operators can transform an otherwise invisible underwater environment into a searchable one.

For Banergy, operations like these are not simply about deploying a machine into the water. They are about creating the capability to see where visibility ends, understand what lies beneath the surface, and turn underwater data into actionable information.

Because sometimes, finding what is hidden begins with having the right way to look for it.
